Fasting: Being Effective Longer

1 Corinthians 6:19-20: "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."

These verses are oftentimes misquoted to refer to your physical body.  "Don't get tattoos, don't get piercings, don't be overweight, and don't be hard on your physical body because it's God's house!"  This verse is so much more than that, and has such a deep spiritual meaning behind it.  However, it does make me think about longevity in ministry.

I think it's important to take good care of your body so that you can be a more effective minister of the Gospel for a longer period of time.  Fasting can help regulate other areas of our lives (our diets and the way we spend our time) to help lengthen our "careers" as Christians.

If you aren't taking steps to protect your body physically, your tenure as a missionary here on earth won't be very long.

I'm praying that fasting helps us exercise self control over the areas of our lives that will ultimately shorten or hinder the ministry that God has called us to do.
