Fasting: Forgiveness of Sins

Leviticus 23:26-32: "And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 'Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall fast and present a food offering to the Lord. And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. For whoever does not fast on that very day shall be cut off from his people. And whoever does any work on that very day, that person I will destroy from among his people. You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall fast.'"

Wow.  Was God serious about fasting, or what!?  The Day of Atonement is the most holy day on the Jewish calendar.  To this day Jews will fast and stay in the temple all day on Yom Kippur.  Why?  Because they think it will appease God for their sins to be forgiven.  It's an act of atonement and repentance.

Aren't you glad that our salvation and relationship with God doesn't hinge on any checklist that we have to accomplish?  Aren't you thankful for Jesus?!

I pray that as you fast today, you'll focus on what Jesus did on the cross for you so that you wouldn't have to jump through religious hoops in order to please God.
